The West Chester Area YMCA and the Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center announced a new initiative specifically designed for busy, budget-conscious families – equal to or less than the cost of a trip to the movies with snacks.
The Weekend Family Membership, which kicks off on Feb. 6, gives families facility access to the Airport Road and Chestnut Street Y branches all day Saturday and Sunday for only $79.
Families will be able to enjoy family-friendly fitness classes together, take part in fun pool games and catch some air in the moon bounce, among a host of other activities. Child Watch services also will be available.
According to a study published in Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Studies, when families regularly spend time in leisure activities, they experience greater emotional bonds within the family. However, today’s often frantic pace of life, makes achieving this important family time challenging. That’s where the Y, with its mission of strengthening families, will play a new role.
“In our continued mission to improve the health and well-being of everyone in the community, we reached out to families and listened to what they needed to make life better,” said Denise Day, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.
“The resounding answer was an affordable place to go on the weekends where they could get active and have fun as a family. That was especially true among our younger families, where Mom and Dad may be early in their career and not have a lot of flexibility during the week,” Day said. “This initiative will help meet those needs.”
The West Chester YMCAs will host this pilot membership plan. If well-received, it could be replicated at other branches. It certainly will give more area families the chance to experience great new ways to engage with each other and their neighbors.
“We have many wholesome, fun weekend activities planned and are excited for families to come out and enjoy them,” said Terri Edgar, executive director of the West Chester Area YMCA. “Weekends at the Y are the perfect time for values-minded families to mix and mingle, be active and creative with their kids and re-discover weekend fun.”
