Recently, my family reviewed the therapeutic picture book, “Liz Tames a Dragon (and her Anger)” by Stephanie Painter. The author has written this book to help children learn to manage their angry feelings and conflicts with others. It is written for children ages 4 to 8, so I was thrilled to “test drive” it on my 3.5 year old and 5 year old daughters. Along with a picture book story, the book includes an Activity Guide with exercises and games that will help children learn to express and verbalize their feelings appropriately. Stephanie’s book is receiving positive reviews from therapists, teachers, and parents. And children too, according to my two! My girls play hard, love much, and argue OFTEN. They both express frustrations and anger is such different ways. And no modeling matters, I believe the way they handle themselves must be innate. This book gives great examples of dialogue and apologies and expressing feelings. We find ourselves now saying “are you being a dragon right now?” because of this adorable and meaningful story.
