Two years ago my husband and I had just moved into our new home (a fixer upper with a ton of potential) just outside of the borough of West Chester. Fast forward 6 months and our life flipped upside down. My husband, a high school science teacher and National Guard reservist was being deployed. As a mom of 3 under 6 years old, in a new home, the year ahead was looking pretty grim.
So what did I do, I took it in stride, refused to let it get me down, and started working on the projects I could tackle (sometimes with help) . Thus make my lonely, late nights, productive ones. My biggest accomplishment was the kitchen cabinet re-facing. I struggled with paint colors and consulted my very dear friend Kelly Benner of Fabulous Food Fairy, fame for support and advice. After much debate I finally decided on an buttermilk for the uppers and black for the lower. And the process began.
The end result was beautiful, but not quite enough, so I decided to take it one step further. I found some old kitchen cabinets in my brothers basement, brought them home and went to work creating a kitchen island. With some elbow grease, paint, bead board, and help from my brother and dad I created an amazing island!!!! The last step was having granite installed. And although I haven’t convinced my husband (he’s home safe and sound – Thankfully) to knock down part of a wall and add backsplash our kitchen is now a haven rather than a hole! Determination will take you places, just have the confidence to take the first step.
