Did you know that here in Chester County, we are in the presence of greatness? That’s right! Many of you don’t realize that in southern Chester County lies The Mushroom Capital of the World! Kennett Square, PA (and the surrounding region) produces over 1,000,000 mushrooms a week! If you are eating a mushroom when you are out to eat, chances are it was grown and farmed here in Chester County.
There is a lot you many not know about our native mushrooms. Did you know that:
- Mushrooms are low in calories and fat free?
- Mushrooms contain Vitamin D?
- Mushrooms are the leading source of antioxidants in the produce aisle?
The Mushroom Council is celebrating National Nutrition Month. To celebrate, find fun and creative ways to work mushrooms into your healthy diet. Need some ideas? Mushrooms can replace some of the ground meat in most recipes. Just chop and cook the mushrooms the same way you would the meat. Combine the mushrooms with the rest of the meat for the recipe, and you’re on your way to a healthy meal! This kind of “swapability” make them a healthy and economical way to make family meals more nutritious.
Here are a few recipes to get you started!
Yum!! How do you like to enjoy mushrooms? In what ways are you excited to incorporate them to your weekly meal plan?
