My family recently took a trip to Florida for a family wedding and a visit to Disney World. We had an early flight and woke up at the crack of dawn to head to Philadelphia international Airport. The day we left must have been a slow travel day because we made it through check in and security in only 30 minutes. My husband and I factored in 2 hours so we had lots of time to wait for our flight to board and take off.
Both of my kids had carry on bags jam packed with coloring books, crayons, UNO, deck of go fish cards, travel games, books, my son had his Mobi Go and my daughter had her DS and ipod. As to not blow through their little bag of tricks and then be bored on the plane I had to come up with something to keep them busy in the airport lickity split. SO.. below are a few things my family did to pass the time waiting at the airport.
* We were one of the only families at our gate when we arrived (so early) so the chairs were all open. We played musical chairs and since we couldn’t take the chairs away like in traditional musical chairs we placed carry on bags, laptop cases and my purse on the chairs that were no longer in play. My husbands handy dandy iphone provided the music for our game. Again no-one was really around us so we were not bothering anyone with music and our games.
I am sure we looked pretty silly bouncing from chair to chair to on lookers at the other gates.
* When they were bored of musical chairs and the other passengers started to arrive and the kids were not able to run around the gate waiting area we played ispy and an airport scavenger hunt (you know I love a scavenger hunt).
*Airport Scavenger Hunt: I wrote a list of items (using a crayon, I am resourceful) that need to be found in the airport and still not to far from our gate. Everyone can go together, or split up the kids with the adults and make a competition out of it.
This is what my family searched for:
Anything with the #1 on it
Credit Card Application Brochure
flight attendant signature
This kept everyone busy for about 30 minutes and everyone had lots of fun waiting for the plane.
Hope these ideas keep your little ones entertained while waiting in the airport as you travel this summer. Happy Vacationing!
